Saunders in as Doncaster Rovers place O’Driscoll on gardening leave

Doncaster Rovers have placed manager Sean O’Driscoll on gardening leave after a poor start to the npower Championship season and drafted in former Liverpool star Dean Saunders from Wrexham.

Saunders has been unveiled at a press conference this afternoon.

He has signed a three-year contract having left Blue Square Bet side Wrexham.

Saunders had an agreement with the Welsh club that they would not stand in his way if a big club came in. He was first made aware of Rovers’ interest last night and quickly accepted the position.

He takes charge for the first time against Crystal Palace tomorrow at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Chairman John Ryan told the press conference he had been aware of Saunders’ talents as a manager for some time.

Rovers made the announcement of O’Driscoll’s departure this morning with the club bottom of the table with only one point from seven matches.

“It is with regret that the shareholders of Doncaster Rovers FC have taken the decision based on the long run of poor results that Sean O’Driscoll and (assistant) Richard O’Kelly be put on gardening leave,” a club statement said.

“They felt that action needed to be taken to address the current position.

“They would like to thank Sean and Richard for all their work during the five years at the club including winning at the Millennium Stadium and Wembley.”

O’Driscoll had received the public backing of chairman Ryan only two days ago.

“I’ve never responded to hotheads who want to sack somebody, I don’t think it’s ever worked, look at Sheffield United,” Ryan said.
