Sheffield Wednesday land Premier winger as Grayson hails Leeds United’s response

Sheffield Wednesday have completed the loan signing of Ben Marshall from Premier League side Stoke City.

The 20-year-old wideman has joined the Owls until January 2012.

Marshall began his career with Manchester United’s youth side before joining Crewe Alexandra’s renowned academy in 2005, spending four years with the Railwaymen.

He signed for Stoke in July 2009 and has since enjoyed successful loan stints at Northampton Town, Cheltenham Town and most recently Carlisle United, where he has spent much of the previous two campaigns.

The highly-rated winger, who can also play up front, made 42 appearances in all competitions for Carlisle last season, scoring five goals.

Marshall said: “This is a great opportunity for me, it was an easy decision to make.

“My main position is a winger but I can play in the hole and up front. Hopefully I can bring some goals as well.

“I have played in front of big crowds before and I’m really looking forward to doing that here.”

Simon Grayson admitted to being “embarrassed” to have seen his Leeds United team in the bottom three of the npower Championship, and hailed the 4-1 win over Hull that took them out of it as “massive”.

Two defeats from their opening two games, two red cards, some chaotic defending and off-field protests against chairman Ken Bates meant United came into tonight’s clash under more scrutiny than they would have liked.

But an early goal from Ross McCormack settled the nerves and, although Tom Lees put through his own net to bring Hull level, goals from Lees - at the right end - Robert Snodgrass and Ramon Nunez helped to lift some of the tension around Elland Road.

“I’m delighted after losing our first two,” the Whites manager, in his 300th game as a boss, said. “We knew it would be difficult after Hull had a good result at the weekend (winning at Ipswich), but we were good with and without the ball and made a really good Hull team look ordinary at times.

“The players were excellent from start to finish. It’s great for the players. They showed tremendous spirit, great attitude, belief and confidence.

“The results we have had could have had a negative effect. We were down to the bare bones tonight, with no strikers, (Jonny) Howson and (Max) Gradel suspended and (Leigh) Bromby and (Ben) Parker injured,

“So it’s a massive result. It’s embarrassing when you see your team in the bottom three, but I had immense belief and confidence in the players to get results.”

Nigel Pearson demanded a quick response from his Hull players after seeing his side mauled at the hands of Leeds.

“The fashion of the defeat makes it difficult,” said a dejected Pearson.

The Tigers face Crystal Palace on Saturday with Person eager to improve City’s woeful home form.

Pearson said: “We need to address out home form, the challenge after last night is to bounce back. It’s a tough league but I am determined not to allow a result like Tuesday night affect our long term goals.”

With two home games in a week against Palace and Reading, a turn around in home form is needed if Hull are not to find themselves lagging behind other promotion hopefuls.

Barnsley manager Keith Hill said his side were well beaten by the better side as Middlesbrough won 3-1 at Oakwell.

Hill said: “I’m more pleased than I was Saturday (defeat to Southampton) because the players showed endeavour, attitude, application and I couldn’t fault that.

“I will always protect my players if I get that - if I don’t get that then I won’t be too happy.

“But we were beaten by the better side and there’s no disgrace in losing to that Middlesbrough side.

“It’s fair to say I learnt a lot from tonight, especially from the opposition, because they were magnificent.”
