The England under-20 international, who can also play on the flanks, is believed to be interesting Blades manager Nigel Clough, who is also being linked with a move for John Brayford, who he worked with at previous club Derby County.

The Cardiff full-back is down the pecking order in South Wales and is also being monitored by Bournemouth, Blackpool and Ipswich Town.

Clough is keen to bring in reinforcements in defence, midfield and attack to bolster his squad for the final third of the season.

The Blades are also continuing in talks with Livingston’s Stefan Scougall, having tabled a offer worth up to £400,000 for the midfielder. Wolves are also interested.

Doncaster Rovers chief Paul Dickov’s big priority is a new centre-forward, with Nottingham Forest’s Matt Derbyshire believed to be his top target.

With Forest being strongly tipped to finalise a move for Danny Graham, who is set to leave Hull City - with the Tigers keen to offload him back to parent club Sunderland after making a £14m move to sign Nikica Jelavic and Shane Long - it could potentially open the door for Darbyshire to leave the club.

Forest will listen to offers for the 27-year-old, out of contract at the City Ground in the summer.

Darbyshire was signed on loan by Dickov while he was at Oldham Athletic last term.

Dickov, who has revealed he is hoping to bring in a new striking recruit before the weekend game at Blackpool, said: “You sometimes want everything yesterday, but we’ve got to be patient and make sure it’s the right one. “I’m sure nobody will be disappointed.”

Meanwhile, Huddersfield Town manager Mark Robins has hinted that several squad players could leave the club in the coming weeks, although he insists he is no rush to push deals through.

A number of senior players such as Keith Southern and Anton Robinson have found opportunities hard to come by of late, while young players including Chris Atkinson,l Danny Carr - whose temporary spell ends at Fleetwood this Sunday - Jake Carroll, Jordan Sinnott and Matt Crooks could also be loaned out.

Robins said: “We have senior players who want to be getting game time, and there are some issues to be addressed.

“We have had one or two enquiries, but nothing stronger than that, but I would expect things to get a bit busier as the end of the month nears.

“Having said that, the reopening of the loan window for league clubs gives us a cushion.”

Huddersfield have today wrapped up the signing of IK Start midfielder Sondre Tronstad.
