FC Twente 3 Tottenham hotspur 3: Delight for Redknapp as Spurs top group

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has applauded his players' efforts in topping a group he rated as the toughest in this year's Champions League.

The Spurs manager saw his side draw 3-3 in typically entertaining fashion against FC Twente in their final Group A outing.

Needing to win to be certain of finishing above Inter Milan, Spurs led three times through a calamitous Peter Wisgerhof own goal and Jermain Defoe's first goals since August.

Each advantage was quickly cancelled out, through a controversial twice-taken Denny Landzaat penalty and goals from Roberto Rosales and Nacer Chadli, but a draw proved enough as Inter lost at Werder Bremen.

It also confirmed Redknapp's side as the top scorers in the group phase and Redknapp was delighted with the final standings on his side's maiden appearance in the competition.

"At the start of this I said this was a tough group – we've got a team near the top of the Dutch league, Werder Bremen, who are a good side with lots of good players, and we've got the holders, Inter Milan. I think it was the toughest group and to top it is brilliant," he said.

"We've gone for it every game. We've come in thinking we could win and that's how we play. We got goals and we conceded them, that's how it is.

"We tend to score plenty and seem to give them away too. You want to win all your games so we wanted to win here but it's important to finish top of the group and we've done that so I'm proud of the boys."

Jermain Defoe, who netted twice on his first Champions League start, added: "We worked so hard to get here and you have to make the most of it.

" We've scored a lot of goals but it's also important not to concede too many so it was frustrating tonight. But we're playing well and scoring goals."
