Flashback - 1996: Remembering how Yorkshire's clubs fared this week 20 years ago

THE big freeze ensured that FA Cup fourth round 20 years ago was a truncated affair, with league and cup fixtures actually staged on the final weekend of January 1996 - those that survived the elements at any rate.

Leeds United were in top-flight action at Nottingham Forest and despite going down 2-1 in the East Midlands, they were afforded a rather more pleasurable development a few weeks later with a fourth round success at Bolton Wanderers.

A solitary strike from Rod Wallace saw Leeds reach the last 16 at Bolton on their way to the quarter-finals.

In the earlier league game by the Trent, Leeds - for whom Carlton Palmer scored - were edged out at City Ground with home goals coming from Kevin Campbell and Bryan Roy (pen).

At the end of January, other Yorkshire sides in fourth round action in the winter of 1996 were Sheffield United, Huddersfield Town and Middlesbrough, enjoying mixed fortunes.

The Blades fitted in their fixture on January 28, 1996 - although they probably wished they hadn’t after suffering a 1-0 home loss to Aston Villa - Dwight Yorke firing the only goal of the game from the spot in the second period.

Three days later, it was back to the bread and butter of league affairs, with United’s survival fight in the second-tier taking a knock in a 1-0 loss at Luton, whose marksman was Boncho Guentchev.

That set up a fifth round tie with Wimbledon, who beat Middlesbrough 1-0 in a Selhurst Park replay after a goalless fourth-round draw at the Riverside Stadium. Dean Holdsworth netted the only goal of the tie.

Bradford City managed to stave off the elements to fit in a league game on the final weekend of January 1996, but a clutch of others were not so lucky as winter took a firm grip.

The Bantams saw off Crewe Alexandra 2-1, courtesy of strikes from Nicky Mohan and Carl Shutt after a goalless first half, with Dele Adebola replying for the Railwaymen.
