Flitcroft insists Tykes must improve all time

Flitcroft has presided over two wins in three matches so far in charge, including last weekend’s thrilling home victory over Leeds United, which helped clinch him the full-time post and moved Barnsley off the foot of the table.

The Lancastrian takes charge for the first time as permanent manager at Portman Road today, weather permitting, with the Reds looking to clinch back-to-back league wins for the first time since December 2011.

Despite some encouraging signs from his side, the new boss feels the hard work has only just began.

Flitcroft, who has completed the signing of ex-Rochdale and Leicester City defender Tom Kennedy on a six-month deal – and is keen to sign a striker to bolster his attacking options – said: “The quality we have showed in the last three games is something we will look to carry on.

“But there is no room for complacency. Every day we are looking to improve and that is something I have stressed to the players.”

On Ipswich, managed by ex-Oakwell favourite Mick McCarthy, Flitcroft added: “Ipswich epitomise what Mick is like as a person – the commitment, courage and honesty of Mick. It is something we will have to equally match up.”

A hot air tent has been in place over the Portman Road pitch all week and has protected it against temperatures below freezing, including one night at minus eight.

Ipswich have contingency plans to move standing snow into the lower tier of the Cobbold Stand, with fans to be re-housed in the upper tier.
