Forest Green 2 York City 1: Minstermen slide to defeat

A FINE second-half rally failed to save York City as they went down to lowly Forest Green and slumped to 19th place, two points above the relegation zone.

The overall performance was in vast contrast to the previous week's FA Cup win at Kidderminster, but new manager Gary Mills was quick to point out the problems.

"This is only the second time they have played 4-3-3 under me and you need to remember that Rome wasn't built in a day. We will be working hard on the training ground from Monday to put things right.

"There are a lack of strikers in the club and this situation needs to be addressed," added Mills.

York are missing Brodie, 37-goal leading scorer last season, now with Crawley. He has not been replaced and York's blunt cutting edge was underlined when Mills took off strikers Leon Constantine and Michael Rankine and switched to 4-4-2 for the last half-hour with centre-back Chris Smith up front.

By that time, York were 2-0 down, Gavin Caines exposing slackness in defence in the fourth minute and Reece Stryche (58) adding the second, Forest Green having scored twice from three shots on target.

York then woke up, James Meredith and Alex Lawless having shots cleared off the line before Lawless (74) narrowed the gap following Michael Ingham's long free-kick.

A late bombardment failed to save the day. Mills clearly has work to do.
