Former goal hero Stewart intends to harm Town

MARCUS Stewart is ready to break hearts at his former club Huddersfield Town.

The veteran striker, who spent four years with the Terriers in the late Nineties, now plays for tomorrow's opponents Exeter City.

Although Town have qualified for the League One play-offs, they could still sneak into the top two if Leeds United, Swindon Town, Millwall and Charlton Athletic all slip up.

However, with Exeter also needing three points to guarantee survival, Stewart knows there can be no room for sentiment.

"It is a really strange situation to be in and it is new territory for me because I have never been involved in a last-day decider to avoid relegation," he said.

"Our season is not over yet and we know we need to win this game to stay up."

With Southend United, Wycombe Wanderers and Stockport County already relegated, Exeter are one of five clubs still battling to avoid the drop on the final day of the season

The Grecians are currently out of danger by virtue of a superior goal difference over Tranmere Rovers and will survive as long as they match Tranmere's result against bottom club Stockport.

"Everyone believes Tranmere will beat Stockport – that is a 'gimme'," said Stewart, who scored 68 goals in 160 appearances for Town between 1996 and 2000.

"We have given ourselves a real chance of avoiding relegation and we are not going to let all the hard work go to waste."

Town were pushing for promotion to the Premier League 10 years ago when Stewart was sold to Ipswich Town for 2.5m.

His departure will always be regarded as one of the main reasons why the club failed to qualify for the play-offs that season.

Commenting on Town's current push for promotion, Stewart said: "Lee Clark has his side playing a high-tempo game. He will be thinking that, with a bit of luck, his side can get automatic promotion.

"If they don't manage that, then they will want to go into the play-offs with a winning momentum. It would be disastrous for them if they started losing now."
