The last time the sides met, Barnsley were on a run of seven wins out of eight under David Flitcroft.

So it was a shock to the system as they plunged back into the bottom three with a 6-0 defeat in which they had Stephen Dawson and Tom Kennedy sent off.

Both sides were seeking their first Championship victory of the new season today and neither Flitcroft nor counterpart Chris Powell were reading anything into the last meeting, Addicks chief Powell saying he would settle for an ‘ugly 1-0 win.’

Dale Jennings and Bradley Pritchard were missing from their respective sides through suspension.

Barnsley made two changes with midfield duo Paul Digby and Tomasz Cywka replaced by Jacob Mellis and Tom Kennedy.

Lawrie Wilson and Simon Church replaced Charlton duo Danny Green and Marvin Sordell.

Barnsley began with wing backs and one of them, Scott Golbourne, produced the cross which Chris O’Grady forced home at the far post in the 16th minute.

Barnsley dominated the rest of the half even though they lost David Perkins with a knee injury.

Jacob Mellis sent over the cross from which O’Grady powerfully headed home the second in the 55th minute to underline the Reds’ grip.

Sub Jordan Cousins made it 2-1 with a shot into the ground which bounced over Scott Wiseman on the line.

Church made it 2-2 when he raced through the middle to slot home in the 72nd minute to stun the Reds.
