FT: Carlisle United 2-1 Huddersfield Town

A DRAMATIC winner from Lee Miller deep into stoppage time condemned Huddersfield Town to a first defeat under Simon Grayson.

The striker beat Alex Smithies with a back header after reacting quickest to a long punt forward from Danny Livesey.

Losing so late left Town devastated but, on the balance of play, they could have few complaints.

They were second best for most of the game but looked to have rescued a point through Lee Novak ten minutes from time.

Instead, Carlisle held their nerve and claimed all three points at the death to deliver a stunning blow to the Terriers’ automatic promotion hopes.

Carlisle had taken the lead just three minutes after the restart when James Berrett swept a Frank Simek in from 10 yards following a neat passing move.

Town then had Tom Clarke for keeping out what seemed a certain goal for Jon-Paul McGovern after more incisive passing had opened up the visitors.

It proved a vital intervention as with ten minutes remaining, Alan Lee rolled an inviting pass across for Novak to tap in at the far post.

Huddersfield then almost clinched a smash and grab raid three minutes into stoppage time when Lee fired against a post before Miller struck at the death to seal the points.

Grayson said: “There’s still plenty to play for and we will keep going right to the end. The team has always responded well to a defeat and we have to come back with a positive response from the players.”

Although his side could easily have snatched victory in injury time when substitute Alan Lee hit the post Grayson said: “It hurt because we had the opportunity to get something out of the game.

“We could have been dead and buried in the first half. Our ball retention and workrate were poor. I felt we could have done a lot better, but we got back into the game. Over the course of the game we probably didn’t deserve to get anything.”
