But Jordan Rhodes struck three minutes after half-time to restore the home side’s advantage.
Just when it seemed the hosts were going to earn all three points, Ashley Grimes netted a second equaliser for Rochdale.
With both Sheffield clubs winnings, it meant Town lost precious points to their rivals.
