Geary blow increases Blackwell's problems

SHEFFIELD UNITED's play-off hopes have been dealt a blow by Derek Geary being all but ruled out for the rest of the season.

The full-back suffered an ankle injury in last week's defeat to Nottingham Forest and scans have since confirmed the worst fears of manager Kevin Blackwell.

Geary only returned to the United side in November after more than a year out with a knee problem.

Blackwell said: "It is a savage blow for Derek because it looks as though it will be three months before he has recovered, so that is virtually the season over for him."

Geary has made nine appearances this season for the Blades.

United's game away at Peterborough United has been rearranged for March 9.

Last Saturday's game at London Road was postponed due to a heavy overnight frost, which meant that the pitch was deemed unplayable by referee Jarnail Singh.

Meanwhile, Peterborough director of football Barry Fry has revealed Middlesbrough are in talks over signing George Boyd.

The Posh captain was the subject of an unsuccessful bid from Gordon Strachan last month but Fry said: "We are still in touch with Middlesbrough about him, but I'd be surprised if he left while it is still mathematically possible for us to stay up.

"Boro were one of a number of clubs who enquired about George in January. They made a bid which was rejected by the chairman because he wanted to keep all his best players to give us the best chance of avoiding relegation.

"We have had several discussions with George's agent regarding a new contract though and he has consistently made it clear that George would not be signing an extension."

Hull City's Premier League game at home to Arsenal on Saturday, March 13 has sold out after the final few tickets were snapped up within minutes of being put on general sale yesterday.
