Gerhard Struber hints at surprise involvement for young Barnsley striker

BARNSLEY head coach Gerhard Struber has hinted that striker George Miller could have a part to play before the end of the season in the Reds' Championship safety mission - having been impressed by his impact in training following his return to the club.

The young forward is back training with the club after returning from his season-long loan at Scunthorpe United, which was curtailed when the League Two campaign ended early in 2019-20.

League rules which came to light last week have revealed that players who are back at clubs after loan spells could be involved in squads and potentially still feature in 2019-20 if teams do not have enough senior players to fill a match-day squad of 19.

Struber, who reports no fresh injury concerns for Tuesday's game with Blackburn, with captain Alex Mowatt and winger Elliot Simoes both fine, said: "I think we need, in the next weeks, to complete this squad and the loan players are a big topic for us.

"When I see George Miller at the moment in training, he shows me a very good picture from the physical side and running side. He has a big impact.

"We will see if he gets the chance in the next weeks.

"I have no new information about Mallik (Wilks - Hull's option to buy him permanently expires after June 30). He is no topic in my plan at the moment. We will see what will come."

Struber has hinted he will freshen up his side in an area or two against Rovers, mindful of the club's hectic schedule - with promoting Conor Chaplin to the starting line-up likely to be high in his thoughts.

The former Portsmouth and Coventry forward has been on the bench for the club's first two games after the resumption.

Struber added: "Every single player is ready and healthy. We have a young squad and I think that in our situation it is an advantage for us.

"When everyone is fit with the load we have in the next few weeks, the players are ready to give all that they have and I have a very good feeling for the rotation models.

"Maybe we make one or other change in the team to have a good freshness and everyone is ready to go."

On Chaplin, the Austrian continued: "Conor is always a big topic for me. He is a very important player for us and his behaviour is very professional.

"It is not so easy when you sit on the bench, but he has shown me he is very professional and will help the team."

"Maybe tomorrow he is a starter, we will see."
