Rumours had been circulating that the Red Devils would be able to sign 19-year-old Cook for £5m at the end of the season.

The youngster reportedly had a clause in his contract that he would be able to talk with other clubs if Leeds failed to clinch promotion – something which is now an almost impossible task.

Cook is one of the Championship’s hottest properties and United will be hopeful of keeping him at the club, or commanding a higher fee come the end of the season.

Rotherham United chairman Tony Stewart has said the club will not be spending money they haven’t got.

A number of clubs, such as Bolton Wanderers, have reported huge debts and Stewart wants to learn from the mistakes of other clubs.

He said: “If you run it like a business you live within your means and you don’t let the fans down. This club has a good budget and when we need a player we get a player, we don’t say we’ve reached our budget.

“People like to talk about big signings and we’ll do what we have to do. I don’t like borrowing money and I don’t like debt. You try to become independent from institutions like banks and we have made Rotherham United that way,” he added.

Huddersfield Town could sign young Liverpool goalkeeper Andy Firth permanently after he joined the club on a trial.

Firth appeared in Huddersfield Under-21’s win over Birmingham City, keeping a clean-sheet as the Terriers triumphed 1-0.
