The Sulphurites ended a three-match losing run with victory over Exeter City in midweek, then paused for breath.

“We decided to stay over after the game so we had a night’s sleep rather than arriving back at three o’clock in the morning,” explained manager Simon Weaver, who signed defender Ed Francis before kick-off at St James’s Park.
“As a result of that I thought the families might benefit from an extra day of the daddies and husbands being at home so they had an extra day off. With all the fixtures coming thick and fast, the rest is important.

“Friday was a sharp, energetic session with a bit of edge but the energy’s intact and we’re raring to go.”

Winger Brendan Kiernan reaped the rewards of his recent hard work when he scored his first Football League goal on Tuesday.

“He’s fought his way back into contention because he’s been one of the best trainers for some time,” said Weaver.

“His performances are stepping up.

“He was a threat the other night and scored a very good goal by being in the right place at the right time, reading the game and getting on the end of it. It was a superb finish and later on we thought he was going to get a second because he found himself in a great area of the pitch.

“This system’s suiting him and he’s driving back the opposition with his pace and trickery.”

Harrogate will make a late decision on captain Josh Falkingham, who has a tight hamstring.
