Heavy friendly defeat leaves Leeds United boss Grayson hurting

LEEDS United manager Simon Grayson is far from happy – just over a fortnight before the start of the new Championship season.

Grayson's side were humbled 4-0 in a pre-season friendly at Bury on Tuesday night – a result described by the Leeds manager as a 'wake-up call'.

"If we play like that in the Championship we'll get done by seven or eight," bemoaned Grayson, who takes a Leeds XI to Gainsborough Trinity tonight.

"It hurt and it should hurt everyone connected with the club, mainly the players," he added. "Maybe it is a wake-up call for some of those who are competing for the jersey."

New forwards Billy Paynter and Lloyd Sam, and captain Richard Naylor were absent from the game but summer signings Kasper Schmeichel, Neil Collins, Federico Bessone, and Paul Connolly were all involved.

Grayson, meanwhile, has confirmed that a group of Brazilian trialists are spending a week training with the club at Thorp Arch.

The players, whose names have not been revealed, are all aged between 16 and 20, and Grayson said: "We will have a look and see where they are in terms of quality and where they are compared to where we are and what we have. There's always someone out there who slips under the radar so the players are always worth a look at."

Huddersfield Town have beaten off competition from Doncaster Rovers to sign striker Joe Garner on loan from Nottingham Forest.

Garner, 22, joined Forest two summers ago in a 1.14m deal from Carlisle United but has fallen down the pecking order at the City Ground since the arrival of manager Billy Davies.

Town manager Lee Clark failed in a bid to sign Garner during the New Year transfer window but is now hoping to help kick-start his career.

"We pursued every avenue in January but Forest didn't want to do business," said Clark. "This summer we started off wanting to do a permanent deal or a longer-term loan but Forest still think he has a future with them so we have settled on a window to window loan.

"We just need to kick-start him again because, for whatever reason, he didn't get a lot of games during the second half of last season with Nottingham Forest."

A former England Under-19 international, Garner started his career at Blackburn but moved to Carlisle without making an appearance at Ewood Park.

Hull City fly out for a five-day training camp in Portugal today with manager Nigel Pearson tipping long-serving midfielder Ian Ashbee to play a major role for the club this season.

Ashbee has not played in a competitive game for over 14 months following two knee operations but is now back in full training and involved in friendlies.

"For him to come back and play a part in two games so far in pre-season is a very good sign," said Pearson. "He will be a very important player for us this season."
