Holland underscore their favourites tag

Holland fired an ominous warning to the rest of the Euro 2012 field on Saturday with a clinical dismantling of Northern Ireland.

Amid a carnival atmosphere at the Amsterdam ArenA, they scored six goals without reply to underline their role as one of the tournament favourites.

In-demand Arsenal striker Robin van Persie scored twice, including once from the spot, while Ibrahim Affelay also got a brace. The other goals came from Wesley Sneijder and Ron Vlaar.

The result meant a miserable second game in charge for new Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill.

Portugal were given a pre-Euro 2012 wake-up call by Turkey at the weekend, losing 3-1 to their visitors in Lisbon.

Umut Bulut’s brace put Turkey 2-0 ahead and, although Manchester United winger Nani got one goal back, the visitors held on and increased their lead with Pepe’s own goal.

Co-hosts Poland enjoyed a routine win, beating Andorra 4-0 in Warsaw.

Ludovic Obraniak got them on their way and Robert Lewandowski made it two before penalties from Jakub Blaszczykowski and Marcin Wasilewski sealed the rout.

In Oslo, all the action came late on as Norway and Croatia drew 1-1. Eduardo gave the visitors the lead with 11 minutes left, only for Tarik Elyounoussi to level two minutes into stoppage time.

In Copenhagen, Denmark put their run of two successive defeats behind them to see of Australia in their final warm-up game.

They beat a strong Socceroos line-up featuring former Leeds United winger Harry Kewell 2-0, with Liverpool defender Daniel Agger winning and converting a penalty, before Andreas Bjelland netted his first international goal.

Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni has named a full-strength side for tonight’s friendly against Hungary.

The match comes less than a week before the Republic’s Euro 2012 campaign gets under way.

Goalkeeper Shay Given and defender John O’Shea will start after recovering from knee and ankle injuries respectively.
