Home hoodoo is no concern for winger roberts

GARY ROBERTS insists Huddersfield Town’s play-off hoodoo on home soil will not be a factor when Bournemouth head north later this week.

The Terriers are, this season, competing in the end-of-season promotion deciders for the seventh time but are yet to win a fixture at either Leeds Road or the Galpharm Stadium.

Of those half dozen play-off fixtures, Huddersfield have drawn four and lost two but Roberts is adamant Town have what it takes to end that barren run come Wednesday’s return against the Cherries.

The 27-year-old wideman, who was in the Huddersfield side held to a goalless draw by Millwall at the Galpharm Stadium in the play-off semi-finals a year ago, said: “We have done well at home this season.

“We have maybe drawn too many games and could have got more points than we have managed.

“Certainly, compared to last season when we won a lot of home games.

“But not too many teams come to Huddersfield and win. We have to take that into the second leg.

“We have taken pride in our home form in recent years and we just have to make sure that continues.

“As a squad, this is our second season in the play-offs and we are a year wiser after what what happened last year.”

On the 1-1 draw that has left the tie firmly in the balance ahead of the return, Roberts added: “I don’t know if I am happy with the result or not.

“With the form we are in, I thought we might win the game.

“But all credit to Bournemouth for the way they came back into it.

“In that respect, we are not overly disappointed and we will be ready for what is now a one-off game.

“They are a good side and we can’t take anything for granted.

“It is like a Cup final, and we have had a few of them lately. We are on our own patch with a full house behind us.”

Roberts added: “It is another game in what could turn out to be a massive year. We have had a lot of big ones lately.

“We will be on our own patch with a full house behind us. As a kid, you dream of playing in front of full houses so it is going to be a special night.

“They made a right noise (at Bournemouth) with only 10,000 in the stadium so you can imagine what it will be like with 20,000 plus.

“I also enjoy night games. We have had good form in night games and certainly not lost too many of those.

“The tie is evenly poised and I am sure our fans are as excited about the game as we are.

“It will be a long wait until Wednesday now. I would rather we played straight away. We want to play and do well.”
