Dikjsteel. Struggled with the movement of Barnsley's clever players and was hauled off at half-time. 5

Fry. Returned to the side and wore the captain's armband. Won't recall the evening with fondness. 5

Wood. A work in progress and given an examination by Barnsley. 5

Coulson. Little chance to turn on the after-burners in first half. Played as a right-wing back. 5

Wing. Had a couple of early chances, but yet to really grasp the nettle against Warnock. 5

Morsy. Handed the defensive midfield brief in front of the defence. Tough debut. 6

Bola. In his first appearance at the Riverside since the last time Barnsley visited, Bola could not make an impact. 5

Tavernier. Couldn't overly penetrate in the number ten brief. 5

Browne. Put an early header wide. Handed a go up front and did not take it. Bundled a late chance off target. 5

Fletcher. A surprise starter against one of his former clubs. Not one to savour. 6

Substitutes: McNair. Provided some much needed authority for Boro. 7

Folarin. Brought on for his debut for Morsy with twenty to go. 6

Howson. Replaced Fletcher in the 70th minute. 6

Not used: Brynn, Spence, Johnson, Assombalonga.

Barnsley

Collins. Little to do in the first half and made just one standard save. Denied Tavernier and McNair on the restart. 7

Sollbauer. Nice and steady as always and no real alarms. 7

Helik. A nice game to make his debut in - against hosts who under-whelmed. Got his head in the way of a few crosses in the second half. 7

Andersen. Employed on the left of a back three and was solid again. 7

Ludewig. Much more involved and posted threat on the right. Enjoyed himself too. 7

Mowatt. Kept it ticking over nicely. 7

Ritzmaier. More assertive than on Saturday, for sure. Encouraging. 7

J Williams. His smile lit up a deserted Riverside with a moment he deserves after his rise to prominence. 7

Thomas. Two classy lay-offs were a joy to behold. Posed real problems. Excellent hour before Woodrow replaced him. 8

Schmidt. Gave Bettinelli the 'eyes' to score a smart opener. Impressive. Took his chance. 8

Frieser. Tested Bettinelli with a crisp early shot and was one of several to enjoy themselves immensely. 7

Substitutes: Styles. Came on for Ludewig at the interval. 6

Woodrow. Entered the fray for the final half-hour. 6

Halme. Came on for Sollbauer twenty minutes from time. 6

Not used: Walton, Chaplin, Miller, Adeboyejo.
