Huddersfield Town 1 Wigan 0: Robins delighted to beat weather and Wigan

A bitter, swirling wind and driving rain in the second half produced a turgid affair which was settled by a long-distance strike from Adam Clayton five minutes from time.

“I am delighted with the win because the conditions were so tough,” said Robins.

“At times it looked like no one had played the game before but I thought what quality there was on show came from us.

“The game was just strange and surreal and the conditions dictated it.

“For a long time it looked like it would be a mistake that settled the game, and a goal would go in off the back of someone’s head or their backside.”

Huddersfield had lost their previous four matches, including a 5-1 defeat at Leeds last week, and the former Coventry boss was delighted to see his troops respond in a positive manner.

“It was important we bounced back,” said Robins. “We lost to our local rivals and it hurt.

“But in that game we had three or four chances and could have been 2-0 up so it could have been a totally different result.

“We have beaten a good side in Wigan. They are one of the teams who will be in the shake-up come the end of the season.”

Wigan striker Martyn Waghorn, on his debut after a loan move from Leicester, saw Alex Smithies turn a first-half effort behind and fired inches wide after the break before missing a great chance to score from close range.

Oliver Norwood also had two long range efforts with the scoreline still goalless.

The first dipping effort from 35 yards went wide and the second, a free-kick from almost the same spot, could have produced a goal of the season contender.

The wind-assisted strike beat Ali Al Habsi but struck the underside of the bar and spun back into the grateful goalkeeper’s arms.

By the end Town were shooting on sight and when Wigan failed to clear the danger Clayton picked up the ball and smashed home from 20 yards into the bottom corner.

Latics boss Uwe Rosler refused to blame any of his players and believes his side were unlucky not to claim all three points.

“I am as happy as I can be having lost the game,” he said.

“Huddersfield caused us big problems but we coped very well in difficult circumstances.

“We had more chances and more possession and we restricted them to shots from long distances. I felt the wrong team won today. If we play like that we will win more than we lose.”

Rosler admitted his team - who had kept five clean sheets in the previous seven Championship games - need to score more goals.

“We have to continue working on our application, the way we pass and the way we press, and we need to score goals,” he said.

“You can’t teach someone to be a 25-goal striker on the training ground.

“It was a game when the slightest mistake was going to be costly and the goal was a good individual effort. Huddersfield have players who can do that.

“The reason we lost the game was that we couldn’t convert our chances into goals but overall I am as happy as I can be.”
