Huddersfield Town's star midfielder Aaron Mooy is keeping his options open

Huddersfield midfielder Aaron Mooy will not address his future until he has celebrated promotion to the Premier League.

Aaron Mooy, one of the key figures in Huddersfield Town's remarkable promotion-winning campaign, has hinted that he will not address his future until after pre-season has begun.

The Australian midfielder spent the season on loan at Huddersfield from Manchester City and will head back across the Pennines to his parent club now his temporary deal has expired. The 26-year-old may find his path to first-team football blocked by City’s star-studded squad, leaving the door open for a potential return to Premier League newcomers Town next season.

Pep Guardiola, the City manager, said before his team’s FA Cup victory over Huddersfield in February that he wanted to see Mooy in a full pre-season at the Etihad Stadium before deciding whether to send him out on loan again. Those sentiments were echoed by Mooy in the immediate aftermath of the Terriers’ Championship play-off final win over Reading on Monday, with the influential play-maker unwilling to pledge his future anywhere.

“I can’t say anything. I’ve got to speak to my agent and Man City,” said Mooy, who scored one of the penalties in Huddersfield’s dramatic shootout win.

“I’ve told them to not talk to me until the end of the season.

“I have just been trying to concentrate on the play-offs.”

Wherever his future lies, it is clear Mooy revelled in his time at Huddersfield.

He described his emotions at Wembley as ‘euphoric’, and revealed that he and his team-mates finally believed they were promotion candidates after playing every team once. “I thought about halfway through the season we had a chance, because we’re a good team,” he said.

“It’s a massive achievement.”
