Huddersfield v Hull City: We'll get the points needed to stay in Championship, says David Wagner

The Terriers host Hull City today having lost five of their last seven games, a run that leaves the West Yorkshire club sitting eight points ahead of the bottom three.

With just six games remaining, it is a useful cushion but, nevertheless, after a week that has brought back-to-back losses against Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough there is a concern that further defeats could yet see Town dragged intro trouble.

Wagner, however, is adamant that will not happen.

“Eight points looks quite good with six games to go,” said the German.

“To be honest, I am confident we will stay in the league next season.

“We will get the points that we need to stay in the Championship, for sure.

“Hopefully, sooner rather than later. I am the sort of person who prefers to look forward to our next games.

“I am realistic enough to know it is possible to lose against Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough. But we always try our best. We will do that against Hull.

“We are strong enough to get the points needed mathematically to stay up.”

Asked how many points Town still need to secure their Championship status, Wagner replied: “I don’t know. Maybe three wins, maybe two, maybe one. We will see.

“For me, the number of wins we will need is not the first thing that I think about. We take every game as a single game and we look to win that game.”

Today’s visitors to the John Smith’s Stadium are desperate for points themselves after a hugely damaging 4-0 defeat at Derby County in midweek left Hull’s automatic promotion hopes hanging by a thread.

“I haven’t forgotten about the top two,” insisted Hull manager Steve Bruce ahead of today’s return to his former club.

“It is going to be difficult, I have to say. Very, very difficult. But it can happen.

“Burnley have drawn three on the bounce and that has opened the door to others.

“But the only thing we can look to do is recapture some sort of form. We’ve got to find a performance again and take heart that we can win all these games. That’s got to be the challenge. Can we win them all?

“We can’t be limping around. Look, we are disappointed, hurt and wounded about what happened on Tuesday. But I hope we can come back and find a bit of form.”
