Hull City have silenced the doubters, insists Grant McCann

HULL CITY manager Grant McCann admits he was delighted to see his Tigers side emphatically 'put to bed' the charge that they struggle to cut it against League One's fancied sides by making a big statement at Ipswich Town.

The Tigers made it back-to-back away league wins after following up the weekend success at MK Dons with a superb 3-0 victory at Portman Road - becoming the first visiting side to pick up three points in Suffolk since March 7 in the process.

Against an Ipswich team who had won their previous six home league matches and conceded just one goal, Hull - beaten earlier this term in key tests against Peterborough United and Fleetwood - produced an outstanding team performance en route to their sixth successive victory in all competitions.

Offering his take on an excellent evening for the Tigers - two points clear at the top of League One with a game in hand - McCann said: "It maybe puts a little slant on people saying we have not been tested yet.

"We have seen these reports and numerous times, people have said we have not been tested and when we do get tested, we fail.

"I think this maybe puts that to bed. This group is working hard to try and compete in every single game and this was no different."

The goals were shared around by the strikers, with Mallik Wilks and Josh Magennis scoring their eighth and seventh goals of the season respectively with victory rounded off by a late goal for Thomas Eaves.

McCann was particularly pleased to see the latter find the net after suffering some misfortune in front of goal in recent weeks and also gave credit to an accomplished performance from his backline, who have conceded just one goal in their past six games in league and cup.

He added: "We had to be disciplined, coming to a team who had not lost here (in the league) all season.

"I think they had only conceded one goal, which was a penalty in their last game against Shrewsbury.

"We knew we would have to be good in terms of our defensive structure and I thought we were excellent right from the start to the last minute with the shape and the aggression in our press and distances in our team.

"That has got us the result as we have players at the top end of the pitch who are in good form and can score goals.

"The desire not let Ipswich score was really pleasing."

On Eaves netting just his second goal of the season, five minutes after coming on, McCann - whose side welcome former club Doncaster Rovers in an eagerly-awaited all-Yorkshire affair in the league next Wednesday, added: "It is brilliant for him. Eavesy is obviously a bit frustrated that he is not in the team at this present time. But the form of others is dictating, that's all.

"But I was really pleased to see him come on and score. He's had chances every time he has played. He shot early and low, which was the pleasing thing for me and it was a really good finish to seal the victory.

"If you shoot early, you have always a better chance of scoring than having an extra touch."

McCann confirmed that Reece Burke will miss the weekend FA Cup game at Stevenage - he will undergo a minor nose operation.

But Keane Lewis-Potter is likely to be back in the mix.
