But the fact they are the two teams battling it out for the third and final available place in the Premier League at Wembley on Saturday clearly means they have enjoyed a better season than most.

Along the way, both managers have rarely been short of words to say both before, during and after matches and, here, Sean Wilson has picked out just a few of the more memorable quotes from both managers during the last eight months or so.

We have witnessed two games which have summed up the Championship play-offs. For how good we were on Saturday, we were as bad (last night) – and the other way around for Derby. It was one of those where we hung on and got there in the end – after beating Derby County over two legs in the play-off semi-finals.

We know what is at stake, but the one thing that footballers don’t worry about on the pitch is money. All this about it being a £200m game, it is not about that. Instead, it is just about performing on the biggest stage and someone being a hero. That is what we have to remember – on what the play-off final really means.

I said it as far back as last September that this is the best Sheffield Wednesday team for a long while. They have quietly gone about their business – on the threat posed by play-off final opponents Sheffield Wednesday.

It’s been a long time for Sheffield Wednesday and it’s very important for the club. Now we can wake up the giant.Let me give a word to Brighton and their manager. They had a fantastic season, they fought until the last minute to get promotion. They deserve promotion.

But that doesn’t mean we don’t deserve it. We have grown up together like a team – after the play-off semi-final victory against Brighton.

In the first half, Bolton controlled the music of the game. They put on calm music and the team, the fans were listening to the music. We followed the melody of the opponents. We tried to put on different music in the second half, we put on a little bit of rock and we opened them up – after his side’s 3-2 win against Bolton on January 12.

I said before the game we would play against one of the strongest teams in the Championship, they have a lot of experience in the Premier League. They are organised and have a good coach – after the 1-1 draw at home against Hull City on October 17.

We can’t sleep because, in the Championship, if you sleep one minute, the opponent will kill you, so I am here to wake everybody up – after a 2-1 win against Brentford on September 26.

When we went 2-0 up, we closed the doors and windows very well. We didn’t want to let any light inside our house. We closed everything – after his side’s 2-0 opening day win over Bristol City on August 8.
