Allam set for announcement over Hull future

The 75-year-old will face the media at 2pm tomorrow and is expected to clarify his position, with rumours abounding that a significant change will be announced at the head of the club.

The Egyptian multi-millionaire businessman famously promised to walk away “within 24 hours” if the Football Association blocked his plan to drop the traditional Hull City AFC moniker and rebrand the team as Hull Tigers.

But despite the FA rejecting his proposals on April 9, Allam has held fire on any decision regarding his own position and backed manager Steve Bruce with a sizeable transfer kitty in the summer, which saw them spend around £40m.

It was the seventh biggest amount paid out by a club in the Premier League in the summer window, with a spate of incoming activity seeing the Tigers break their previous transfer record three times in signing Jake Livermore, Robert Snodgrass and Abel Hernandez.

The focus has now switched again to Allam’s position and the nature of the forthcoming announcement, and the Tigers’ owner will break his silence tomorrow afternoon.

Ending his own day-to-day involvement as chairman, with all hands-on matters passing down to his son Ehab, who has been acting chief executive since December, is viewed as the most likely development.

But announcing the outright sale of the club remains a possibility with Allam frequently threatening to do that during the Tigers’ stand-off with fan groups such as City Till We Die regarding the emotive name change issue.

Any such development would appear unlikely, with Allam having bankrolled Bruce’s overhaul of the playing staff in recent months and presided over the most successful season in the club’s history last term.

Yet it still remains a possibility, with the club offering no clues whatsoever regarding the nature of the announcement.

While Allam clashed with supporters regarding the name change issue, his son also drew the anger of some fans when he presented a redesigned club badge earlier this year which expunged the words ‘Hull City AFC’.
