Football fans locked up for match-day affray

TWO Hull City fans have been locked up after pleading guilty to affray on the day of a Championship football match at Barnsley last year.

A further four youths – also Hull fans – admitted public order offences at Sheffield Crown Court yesterday following an 11-month investigation by South Yorkshire Police into the violence that broke out both before and after the match between Barnsley and Hull at Oakwell on Saturday, October 30, 2010.

Leon Plattern, 18, and Joe Mains, 20, were sentenced to eight and six months respectively at Young Offenders Institution after admitting affray yesterday.

Tom Holtby, 18, also pleaded guilty to affray and was given a 26-week sentence, suspended for two years, and ordered to undertake 150 hours’ unpaid work.

A 16-year-old youth admitted the same charge and was remitted to Youth Court for sentencing.

Steffan Radley and Jamie Yates, both 18, both admitted public order offences and were each given 12-month community orders with 100 hours’ unpaid work.

Police requested the offenders also receive football banning orders, but the court declined the applications yesterday.

A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Police said after the hearing that the force is now “considering its options”.

Previously, two Hull City fans and one Barnsley fan have admitted public order offences following incidents on the same day. All three received three-year banning orders. Another Barnsley fan received a caution.
