Football fans ‘will be able to travel despite Hull train strike’

The strike has been called by the RMT, following what they call the “unwarranted redundancy” of a colleague.

The 24-hour strike is due to start at midday on Sunday and ends at midday on Monday.

Hull Trains, which is meeting the RMT with ACAS this afternoon, in a bid to resolve the dispute, said it could affect five services, between the city and Kings Cross in London, including four on Monday.

But a spokeswoman said they may still be able to run all the services by bringing in extra staff.

RMT members had voted nine to one for industrial action over the worker, who they believe was forced out for challenging a senior manager last year who was verbally abusing a colleague.

RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said: “RMT has given Hull Trains plenty of time and opportunity to reinstate our member but they have chosen instead to adopt a cavalier and confrontational attitude. As a result of that hard-headed approach we balloted for both strike action and action short of a strike.

“Our members registered their anger in an overwhelming vote for action and following consideration by the union’s executive we will be taking action this weekend and through into Monday.”

Hull Trains said they were looking at bringing in extra staff to run the services, two on Sunday and one on Monday.

A spokeswoman for Hull Trains said: “The aim is to minimise the impact on passengers.

“We can guarantee that we will be running the services which bring Chelsea fans to and from Hull on Sunday.”
