Fryatt feels silence will be golden for Hull’s chances

MATTY FRYATT admits quietening down the Elland Road crowd tonight is Hull City’s priority.

The Tigers make the trip along the M62 in buoyant mood following the weekend win at Ipswich Town, Fryatt’s second-half strike being enough to clinch a 1-0 victory and extend the club’s away record to just one defeat in 19 league outings.

It is a phenomenal run and one that Fryatt believes Hull can extend tonight – providing the home fans, who staged a pre-match protest against chairman Ken Bates before Saturday’s defeat to Middlesbrough, can be silenced.

The Hull striker said: “If we play the way we did against Ipswich, we will be in with a shout of winning. We didn’t let Ipswich get into their stride.

Leeds fans are always up for it. They are superb and Leeds always get a good following. They lost on Saturday and they will be under pressure so, if we can keep them subdued for the first 15 minutes, hopefully things will go according to plan and we can keep things quiet at the back early doors before catching them on the break.”

Hull drew 2-2 with Leeds twice last season, with Fryatt netting in the second of those encounters at the KC Stadium in February.

He added: “Leeds will want to get on a run themselves. They will be disappointed with two defeats. They are a good team and they showed it last season by being in the play-off spots all season before fading at the end.

“They have some good players so with their home support it will be a difficult game. I expect they will be pumped up to reverse what has gone on. They will be up for it and so will we. It is a Yorkshire derby.”

Hull have not won at Elland Road since September 1987, but considering both United’s struggles this term and the form of Nigel Pearson’s men on the road, the East Riding club fancy their chances of ending that run.

Fryatt, who netted nine times last term, explained: “Hopefully, with a bit of rest we will be good to go against Leeds and we can put in the same performance and get the same result (as on Saturday at Portman Road).

“We need more confidence at home to break teams down. Last week (in a 1-0 defeat to Blackpool) we had the chances to win the game but that hasn’t always been the case at home.

“Away from home, though, we are a hard team to beat. We have enough on the break to create chances. We set up well away from home.

“I think we have to build (on the win at Ipswich) for the rest of the season. We face a tough team in Leeds but we will try and continue what we did at Ipswich in that game.”
