Hull City 1 Leyton Orient 1: Proschwitz to the rescue as Hull’s fringe players fail to impress Bruce

Hull City manager Steve Bruce hit out at his side’s “awful” performance after striker Nick Proschwitz denied League One Leyton Orient a shock victory with a last-gasp equaliser.

David Mooney’s strike 12 minutes from time put the visitors on course for the FA Cup fourth round, but Proschwitz earned a draw and a replay by heading home in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

“We can’t be any worse playing down at Orient than we were playing out there, ” said perplexed Bruce, who made nine changes to his starting XI.

“It was absolutely awful. Were there any positives? Well, it did not rain.

“Only three players – the two central defenders and the goalkeeper – came anywhere near to producing what they can, and the rest did not.

“The one thing you can say is that a lot of the players need more games, as a lot haven’t played recently.

“However, we had an experienced team out there on the pitch and they just did not perform at all. Will I play the same players in the replay? Possibly.

“We have quite a record in the Cup. I think we’ve only made the fourth round in two of the past 25 seasons.

“If I’m honest, it’s a replay we could possibly do without, but we’re still in the draw and still in the FA Cup.”

After Proschwitz slid a shot just wide early on, Orient had the better of the first half.

Leon McSweeney forced Hull goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic into a flying save with a dipping right-footed shot from 30 yards, and Kevin Lisbie blazed over after a flowing move.

However, the best chance fell to Lee Cook, who seized on a poor back-header from Andy Dawson before having his shot smothered by Jakupovic.

The visitors took the lead when Dean Cox delivered a superb cross from the right and Mooney headed home from close range.

Visiting goalkeeper Jamie Jones saved well to deny Proschwitz as Hull pressed, but the German forward finally got his goal as he powered home Tom Cairney’s cross from the left.

Orient manager Russell Slade felt his side should have been awarded a penalty by referee Iain Williamson before Mooney’s goal when the striker appeared to have been hauled down by Hull defender Alex Bruce, who was the last man.
