Hull City 2 Huddersfield Town 0: Debut goals for Tigers duo

The Tigers were far from at their best against a dogged Huddersfield who caused untold problems for their hosts in a 20-minute period after half-time.

However, City prevailed thanks to their quality of finishing on an afternoon when the Allam family were missing from the KC Stadium.

Indications are that neither Assem Allam not son Ehab - who recently had an attempt to re-brand as Hull Tigers rejected for a second time this summer - will attend any games this season.

In their absence, Clucas and Akpom enjoyed dream bows in amber and black to give Hull a winning start to life back in the second tier.

The game was a slow burner in the first half, as a Huddersfield side clearly set up to try and contain the former Premier League outfit did their job well..

Town had the game’s only decent chance of the first half hour when Harry Bunn was played in by Tommy Smith before firing over from a tight angle.

Neat play by Bunn on 20 minutes also had Ryan Taylor floundering on the Tigers right only for Jason Davidson to waste the opening with a poor cross.

City finally clicked into gear six minutes before the break when Ahmed Elmohamady whipped in a typically dangerous cross.

Sam Clucas, stood all alone in the six yard area, then had his first effort blocked by Alex Smithies only to rifle in the rebound.

Town wasted a great chance to equalise three minutes after the restart when Davidson blazed over on the volley after being found totally unmarked seven yards out by Jacob Butterfield.

It was a warning to Hull but not one that was heeded as, seven minutes later, Bunn ghosted past Michael Dawson before Isaac Hayden fired a clearance against the Terriers forward and was fortunate to see the ball bounce wide.

Davidson then failed to release Nahki Wells by over-hitting an intended through ball that allowed Allan McGregor to race from his line to clear.

McGregor was again City’s saviour on 67 minutes when he turned away a Butterfield drive before Wells tried to be too clever inside the six-yard box and was dispossessed by Andrew Robertson.

Just as Town seemed set to pay their dominance pay, Hull doubled their advantage.

A Sone Aluko cross caused the first problem for Huddersfield, who could only half clear the danger.

The ball fell to Akpom, who showed tremendous poise to beat one defender before firing an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net.
