McKenna is on cue to become third summer arrival at Hull

HULL CITY manager Nigel Pearson is set to sign Nottingham Forest winger Paul McKenna on a two-year deal.

McKenna, 33, will be allowed to leave the City Ground on a free transfer by new Forest manager Steve McClaren.

The deal is unlikely to be completed before the weekend but will bring the third new arrival of the summer to the KC Stadium after the capture of Manchester United pair Cory Evans and Joe Dudgeon.

The Tigers have also expressed interest in signing Forest’s veteran striker Dele Adebola.

Ipswich Town manager Paul Jewell has ruled out another move for Hull’s out-of-favour midfielder Jimmy Bullard.

The former England international, 32, spent four months on loan at Portman Road last season when Hull paid over half of his £45,000-a-week wages.

Jewell said: “It’s a deal we’d both like to do but – if it’s a messy deal financially – you just can’t do it. Jimmy’s got two years left on a huge deal and, after hours of negotiations, it’s not going to happen.”

Former Leeds United captain Richard Naylor could be heading to Yorkshire neighbours Doncaster Rovers.

Centre-back Naylor, 34, was released by Leeds this summer and Rovers chairman John Ryan admits that signing new defenders is a priority at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Defenders Wayne Thomas and Byron Webster have been freed, Matthew Kilgallon has returned to parent club Sunderland, and both Sam Hird and James Chambers have stalled on the offers of new deals.

“We are looking to bring in five or six new players but the main priority at the moment is defenders,” said Ryan. “We`ve got a lot of irons in the fire but nothing definite yet.”

Heffernan joined the Owls on a free transfer from Doncaster last summer but failed to command a regular first-team place and scored three goals in his 23 appearances.

Barnsley are delaying a decision on the future of captain Jason Shackell until a board meeting tomorrow. The defender is the subject of an £800,000 bid from Championship rivals Derby County and has expressed a desire to move to Pride Park.

Huddersfield Town have released former Bridlington centre-back Leigh Franks.

Rotherham United have denied reports that adequate funding is not in place for development of the club’s new stadium. The Millers plan to quit Sheffield’s Don Valley Stadium at the end of next season – after a four-year temporary stay– but work on the new ground near Rotherham town centre has been slow to get off the ground.

A club statement said: “Rotherham Football Club would like to assure supporters that, taking into account the grant funding that has been applied for, the £5m loan from the council completes the funding requirements for the new stadium.”

A local newspaper article had suggested a £2.3m shortfall still existed but the statement continued that the story was published “without obtaining full clarification from the club.

Archie Christie has been appointed chief scout and head of football development by Bradford City after his departure from a similar post at Dagenham and Redbridge.
