Megson refuses to get carried away by West Ham victory as Blackpool lie in wait

SHEFFIELD Wednesday manager Gary Megson insisted that his club’s shock victory over West Ham United in the FA Cup yesterday was ‘no giant-killing’.

The Owls, who are second in the League One table, beat the Hammers, who are second in the Championship and now play Blackpool in the fourth round.

But lifelong Owls supporter Megson stressed that the Hammers – despite their recent history in the Premier League – are not a bigger club.

“I don’t think Sheffield Wednesday will ever play a game where you can say it’s a giant-killing. It’s no big deal,” said Megson. “This place has had a nightmare for 15 years and we are trying to get that momentum to move it back.

“Even if we were playing (Manchester) City or United, we are still Sheffield Wednesday and if you look back not too long ago we played those games twice a year.

“We are a League One side because that is where we are but we have players who can play at a higher level.”

Striker Chris O’Grady settled yesterday’s contest with an 87th-minute goal after goalkeeper Nicky Weaver saved a penalty from Hammers striker Sam Baldock.

The Owls have progressed beyond the third round for the second consecutive season but it is only the second time in 11 years that they have achieved that feat.

Looking ahead to the Blackpool game, O’Grady said: “We are reasonably happy with the draw and we will go there believing we can win.”

A convincing 3-1 win for Hull City at home to Ipswich Town put them into the hat for the fourth round and they will be at the KC Stadium again for the visit of League Two leaders Crawley Town.

Sheffield United will again be at home on the weekend of January 28-29, but will have to wait a while before discovering whether they face Birmingham City or Wolves, who drew 0-0 at St Andrews on Saturday.

Middlesbrough face a plum derby with Sunderland with their 1-0 win at home to Shrewsbury handing them a trip to the Stadium of Light.

Black Cats manager Martin O’Neill, reacting to the draw, said: “It will mean something to the supporters who have stayed on here and cheered us off and maybe Lee himself.”

For those outside of Yorkshire, however, the biggest draw came early on last night when Manchester United and Liverpool were pitted against each other at Anfield.

United have won the competition 11 times and overcame rivals Manchester City 3-2 at the Etihad Stadium yesterday.

The game will be the first meeting of the two sides since the controversial clash in October when Liverpool forward Luis Suarez racially abused United defender Patrice Evra. Liverpool accepted an eight-match ban for the Uruguayan over the incident earlier this month.

QPR – who last night sacked manager Neil Warnock – will host west London neighbours Chelsea if they can overcome the MK Dons in a replay at Loftus Road.

There are two other definite all-Premier League ties with West Brom hosting Norwich and Everton welcoming Fulham to Goodison Park.

Arsenal will be at home to Aston Villa if they can overcome Leeds at the Emirates Stadium tonight, while Bolton will take on Swansea at the Reebok Stadium if they see off Macclesfield in a replay, having drawn 2-2 at Moss Rose on Saturday.

Newcastle will face the winner of the replay between Wrexham and Brighton.

Swindon, who upset the odds to knock out Wigan on Saturday, will face a trip to the East Midlands to take on either Nottingham Forest or Leicester.

Elsewhere, Championship leaders Southampton will travel to face the winners of the replay between Dagenham & Redbridge and Millwall, while League One Stevenage welcome Notts County. Tottenham will make the short trip north to take on Watford, while Derby host Stoke.
