Tigers let McShane join Reds on Hobbs’s arrival

barnsley have signed Hull City defender Paul McShane on a two-month loan deal.

The Republic of Ireland international left the KC Stadium just 24 hours after the Tigers had brought in Jack Hobbs on loan from Leicester City.

Mark Robins moved for McShane as he needed to bring in cover for Stephen Foster, who was injured in last weekend’s draw with Ipswich Town.

It means the 27-year-old, who will be reunited with former Manchester United team-mate Luke Steele following his switch to Oakwell, could make his Barnsley debut this weekend against Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

McShane’s departure from Hull came as something of a surprise yesterday, even allowing for the arrival of Hobbs just 24 hours earlier.

He has featured 19 times for Hull this season, the most recent of which came just a week last Saturday when he played the full 90 minutes of a 5-1 thrashing of Scunthorpe United at Glanford Park.

Nigel Pearson’s decision to release McShane, albeit with a clause inserted in the deal that allows immediate recall once the first 28 days of the two-month deal have elapsed, suggests the Tigers manager is more than happy with the defensive resources at his disposal.

McShane, who along with new team-mate Steele won the FA Youth Cup when at Old Trafford, first joined Hull just four games into their initial season in the Premier League in a loan deal from Sunderland. He went on to make 19 appearances – including starting roles in the never-to-be forgotten wins at Arsenal, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur – before being recalled by the Black Cats in January 2009.

He returned to the KC Stadium on a permanent deal in September last season and went on to feature in 27 league games as Hull were relegated from the top division.

Meanwhile, new signing Hobbs has spoken of his delight at being reunited with former manager Pearson at the KC Stadium.

The 22-year-old spent two hugely successful years playing for Pearson at the Walkers Stadium as the Foxes won promotion from League One in 2009 before reaching the play-offs last term.

Hobbs, who made 30 appearances for Leicester this season, said: “As soon as I heard of the interest from Hull City, it was an easy decision for me.

“I know the management staff well from their time at Leicester and Hull City are at the top of the form guide and looking to go places.

“It was an easy decision and everything has gone through quite quickly, so I’m delighted to be here.

“He is doing a good job here and the management staff he has got here are fantastic,” added Hobbs.
