I'm so impressed with Cellino's knowledge - new Leeds United head coach Garry Monk

The ex-Swansea City manager is the seventh full-time head coach at the club since Cellino took over in April 2014 having signed a rolling one-year deal.

Monk, 37, back in management after being sacked by Swansea last December, says that he was impressed by Cellino’s depth of football knowledge during talks and has revealed he has been reassured that he will have the final say on first-team matters.

Monk, set to be joined by his former Swans assistant Pep Clolet – with a move likely to be finalised shortly – said: “At the end of the day, it is results that dictate any manager’s fate and any manager will tell you that.

“Nothing else is really my focus. I am just so excited to be here.

“I am very honoured to be the manager at Leeds United and I am looking forward to taking this club – and this team especially – forward.

“It is a big challenge, but it is a really big attraction as well.

“I have had other options and other people talk to me. But for whatever reasons, whether it was timing or it was not the right situation, I feel this is the right situation for me and this is what I have been waiting for. I am ready to go.

“I feel I have a way of working that will suit Leeds United, the players that are here and the way that the club wants to grow as well and the way the club wants to push forward and have success – I think we all want that.”

On working with Cellino, Monk stressed: “I felt a really good connection straight away with him and everyone at this club in this short space of time.

“We will be working together, we will be on the same page with the same focus and we will stay focused on that.”

Monk was flanked at yesterday’s press unveiling by new club director Niccollo Barratieri, who has previously worked in England as an adviser at Sunderland.
