As expected, UEFA have confirmed the tournament, due to be played in England next year, will now take place in July 2022.

The Yorkshire Post understands that the plan is still for Rotherham United and Sheffield United to host three matches and a knockout game each, and there is confidence this will happen. The New York Stadium was due to hold a quarter-final and Bramall Lane a semi-final in the tournament, which was scheduled to kick off at Old Trafford and finish at Wembley.

The 2022 tournament will be four days longer than it would have been in 2021, running from July 6 to 31st, giving slightly more wriggle room logistically. The Commonwealth Games are due to start in Birmingham on July 27, but do not include football.

The change is in line with the men's competition, which has also been pushed back a year to 2021, and will allow more time for qualification games.

Keeping the women's competition in its original slot would have seen an overlap with the men's competition, which is due to be played across Europe, but whose semi-finals and finals have been earmarked for Wembley.

England are set to have a new manager by then, with Phil Neville expected to announce he will step down at the end of his current contract, which was due to run until the end of the tournament next summer.
