Investment talks held by Blades in Far East

SHEFFIELD United chief executive Trevor Birch has confirmed that the Blades are holding talks with potential investors from Malaysia.

Birch returned yesterday from a trip to the Far East but insists that negotations are still at an early stage.

The Blades, relegated from the Premier League three years ago, have been trying to secure new investment as part of a long- term strategy which will take the club back to the top flight.

Birch, who negotiated Roman Abramovich's 140m takeover deal at Chelsea seven years ago, was put in charge of financial affairs at Bramall Lane last season after chairman Kevin McCabe decided to take a background role.

Both men skipped a pre-season friendly against Argentinian side Estudiantes on Sunday to take part in these latest round of talks.

"We have been there talking to a few people," said Birch last night. "But nothing has yet been finalised and we are still talking.

"Any investment would be in the form of a partnership rather than a takeover," he added. "And we are not just looking to Malaysia."

The Blades have spoken to Air Asia chief executive Tony Fernandes during the last few months but that is unlikely to lead to anything.

Fernandes, who also owns the Lotus F1 team, has been approached by seven English clubs, including Norwich City, since losing out to David Sullivan in the race for control at West Ham United at the start of the year.

An increasing number of foreign investors are now turning to Championship clubs after failing with bids for clubs in the Premier League.

Earlier this summer, Cardiff City – who the Blades visit for their opening game of the season on Sunday – were the subject of a 6m investment with Malaysian businessman Dato Chan Tien Ghee replacing Peter Ridsdale as chairman.
