Ipswich Town sign former Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough player ahead of FA Cup clash with Rotherham United

Ipswich Town have signed Massimo Luongo on a six-month contract ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup clash against Rotherham United.

Luongo left Sheffield Wednesday at the end of last season after his deal expired before arriving at Middlesbrough on a short-term deal in September. He failed to make a senior appearance for Boro and has been training with Ipswich since December.

He started his career at Tottenham Hotspur and spent time on loan at Portman Road before moving to Swindon Town, QPR and then Wednesday. He was at Hillsborough for three seasons before leaving the club in the summer.

Luongo says his focus is on helping Ipswich get promoted as they sit third in the League One table, two points behind Sheffield Wednesday. However, he could make his debut when Ipswich welcome Rotherham to Portman Road in third round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

"It’s been 10 years or so since I was here before and it’s great to be back," said Luongo.

"I want to be in a team that’s doing well and I think that this is a good opportunity here. I’m delighted to get the deal done and now I’m focused on helping the team get promotion."

Town boss Kieran McKenna added: "Massimo is an accomplished midfielder with an abundance of experiences in club and international football.

"He is a versatile and intelligent player who strengthens our options for the second half of the season. His experience and professionalism will also be an important addition to our dressing room."
