Karlan Grant remains at Huddersfield Town but exit to West Brom still likely

But they will know one way or another before their next match if Grant is going to be available to them for the rest of 2020.

The Baggies have been open about their interest in completing a deal for the forward, who is understood to be keen to join, but have been unable to agree a price with the Terriers.

Grant has been training on his own since returning for pre-season, in the expectation that he will be moving in this transfer window.

Although 11pm last night was the deadline for English clubs to complete deals from overseas, players can be traded into or out of Football League clubs until 5pm on October 16.

Slaven Bilic confirmed last week: “The rumours are true - he is one that is on our list. Very quality player, of course.”

Leicester City’s Islam Slimani is viewed as an alternative.

Grant, who can play as a centre-forward but has produced his best football for Huddersfield from the left, scored 19 goals last season to add to the four he scored for them in the Premier League after joining from Charlton Athletic in January 2019.

Although Huddersfield did not sign any new players yesterday, reserve goalkeeper Ryan Schofield did agree a new contract keeping him at the club until 2023.

At the weekend Middlesbrough were confident of completing a second loan deal for attacking midfielder Patrick Roberts, but again with no pressure of time, the deal was still to be completed last night.

Elsewhere, Manchester United signed Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani and Porto’s Brazilian defender Alex Telles, with centre-half Chris Smalling leaving to join Roma in Serie A.

Cavani, who has signed a one-year contract with the option to extend for a further year, moves to Old Trafford on a free transfer following his release from Paris St Germain this summer.

Theo Walcott completed a season-long loan move back to first club Southampton from Everton. The 31-year-old England international, who made his senior debut for the south-coast club as a 16-year-old, has returned almost 15 years after his departure.

Fulham signed Danish centre-back Joachim Andersen from Lyon on a season-long loan.
