Keep destiny in our own hands – Simon Grayson

SIMON GRAYSON has one simple message for his Leeds United players ahead of the weekend trip to Charlton: make sure automatic promotion is still in our own hands at the final whistle.

The Elland Road club travel to The Valley knowing six points from the final two games of the season would be enough to clinch second place, regardless of how third-placed Millwall get on.

However, with Charlton still having an outside chance of forcing their way into the top two, Grayson appreciates Saturday's game will be a big test for his side.

He said: "When I looked at the fixtures last summer, I anticipated that us and Charlton would be up there so May 1 could be an important day.

"I couldn't be sure that anything would be riding on this game by the time it came around but it was always possible that there might be. There is obviously something riding on it now. It is a great game.

"I am sure it will be very cagey but both teams are going to try and win it. The game has got all the ingredients you usually find in a big game and you would have to say that our players have responded pretty well in those this season.

"The fact is that we need to win our last two games. I would love us to be coming back from Charlton already promoted and then playing in front of a sell-out crowd at Elland Road (against Bristol Rovers) but if we come back from Charlton still needing a result to go up then I would take that too.

"We can only see where this game takes us. I would have preferred to be promoted now and not going into the last two games trying to secure it but promotion is a fantastic feeling whenever it happens."

Grayson has no fresh injury worries ahead of the trip to Charlton with perhaps his biggest problem being who to leave out up front.

Certainly, the manner of last weekend's 4-1 victory over Milton Keynes Dons was encouraging with Jermaine Beckford coming off the bench to net twice in a game that also saw strikers Max Gradel and Luciano Becchio find the net.

Grayson said: "It has to be a normal week of training for us. You can't do anything else at this stage. You can't approach it differently or change things around because, if you do, the mindset of your players will wonder away from what they need to be thinking about.

"We are on a a pretty decent run winning four of our last five games so there should be a belief that we can go on and win these last two. But you have to be level-headed about what is in front of us. It is one game at a time now because we have only got two left. The focus is on Charlton and we will see where that takes us.

"To be honest, I am not too worried about Swindon and Millwall as things stand. I might be thinking about them next week depending on what happens at Charlton and what result we need against Bristol Rovers.

"If and when we do get promoted, it will be nice to get there. But regardless of what happens, it's been a good season in terms of what we have done and the runs we have been on.

"We want to finish it off now by getting out of this league."
