Leeds United 2 QPR 0: Becchio agrees new Whites deal

LEEDS UNITED moved into the Championship's automatic promotion places for the first time since being relegated from the top flight a little over six-and-a-half years-ago courtesy of a Max Gradel double.

The Ivory Coast wideman followed his 25th minute strike with an equally clinical strike after the break to extend United's unbeaten run to nine games.

Leaders QPR battled hard in the second half and put plenty of pressure on Simon Grayson's men.

But once Gradel had doubled Leeds' advantage on 70 minutes with a neat shot past Paddy Kenny there was no way back for the visitors.

And with Swansea losing 1-0 at Sheffield United, it was enough to push United up to second place in the Championship for the first time since being relegated from the Premier League in May, 2004.

Leeds completed a good day's work after striker Luciano Becchio put pen to paper on a new three-and-a-half-year contract.

The Argentine striker, who has scored 47 goals in 126 appearances for the club, signed the deal which will keep him at Elland Road until 2015 in the wake of today's win.

"I'm very happy to sign the contract and stay at the club," he told the club`s official website.

"I love the fans, we are doing well and we want to get to the Premier League. I want to be a part of that and I'm really pleased."

Boss Simon Grayson added: "He has shown his importance to the club with his goalscoring ability. It was vital that we secure his services after losing Jermaine Beckford last season."
