FIFA announcement means Leeds United, Huddersfield, Middlesbrough, Hull City and Sheffield United will earn a share of £190m from World Cup

A number of Yorkshire clubs are set to receive a financial windfall from the FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year with the governing body set to distribute around £200m to teams whose players participate in the tournament.

FIFA confirmed details of its club benefits programme on Tuesday, announcing that around £189m had been set aside.

Clubs are set to be given approximately £9,000 per player for each day they remain with their national team, starting from each country’s preparations and lasting until each nation is either knocked out of the tournament or reaches the final.

The more participants a club has, and how far each of those players progresses in the tournament, will determine the final amount a club can claim.

There will be plenty of players from Yorkshire clubs who could be in Qatar later this year.

Brenden Aaronson and Tyler Adams from Leeds United are both in line to represent the United States of America while Rasmus Kristensen and Mateusz Klich could be called up by Denmark and Poland respectively.

Huddersfield Town trio Yuta Nakayama (Japan), Sorba Thomas (Wales) and Michal Helik (Poland) could feature while Middlesbrough duo Zack Steffen (USA) and Riley McGree (Australia) are likely to be with their nations.

Any club that a player has been registered with in the two years prior to the World Cup will be eligible for a share of the daily pay-out.

This means that most Yorkshire clubs will have to share their distributions with the likes of Aaronson and Adams both signing for Leeds in the summer. On the other hand, Leeds will be entitled to a share of the distribution from Manchester City and Barcelona respectively, if Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha head to Qatar.

If Helik heads to the tournament with Poland, Barnsley will be entitled to a share.

Players who make it to the final could earn their clubs a share of over £250,000 just accounting for the 28 days the tournament is set to last.

For the 2018 World Cup, won by France in Russia, 416 clubs from 63 countries benefited from the programme.

There are plenty of other players from Yorkshire sides who still have the chance to play their way into contention or who may be called up in the event of injury or other unavailability.
