Capital One Cup: Hopes of taking the Wembley trail can now begin for Yorkshire’s clubs

For the second time in three seasons, four White Rose sides will lock horns at the first-round stage following on from Rotherham United and Huddersfield Town’s home encounters with Sheffield Wednesday and Bradford City respectively at the start of the competition in 2013-14.

Having met in the first round last year, Doncaster and York will once again face Tyke opponents with Rovers paired with Leeds in the competition for the third time in five seasons at the Keepmoat Stadium.

The derby tie sees Uwe Rosler handed a reunion with former Manchester City team-mate Paul Dickov, boss at Doncaster and his assistant Brian Horton, who bought the German over to English football with City in 1994.

The Keepmoat clash will also be a sentimental one for Alex Mowatt, who made his debut at his hometown club in a second-round tie there in August 2013 which Leeds won 3-1, while Billy Sharp also returns to his old side.

Leeds also triumphed 2-1 in a round two clash in Doncaster in August 2011.

United have never been beaten in six Keepmoat outings, winning five and you have to go back to August 1951 for the last time Doncaster beat Leeds on home soil.

A big Leeds following is also likely to make for one of the healthiest attendances in the opening round with York also handed an intriguing home clash with 2012-13 finalists Bradford visit Bootham Crescent.

You have to go back to 1997-98 for the last time that the Minstermen reached round two, with manager Russ Wilcox anxious to rectify that glaring sequence with the club suffering nine consecutive opening-round losses.

Wilcox also does not need telling twice that progression in the competition would also augment his playing budget and help provide a welcome cash boost, even if hitting the jackpot like Bradford did three seasons ago when their amazing run to the final raked in around £1m in gate receipts and TV cash is extremely unlikely.

Yet a lucrative one-off tie is something Wilcox says is not beyond the realms of possibility, citing the example of Cambridge United in the FA Cup last season, when they got past two rounds to land a money-spinning home tie with Manchester United.

On his side’s draw, Wilcox said: “First and foremost, we’d have liked a home draw and we have got that and face a Bradford side who have been fantastic over the years in cup competitions. It makes for an exciting draw.

“Without a doubt, it can help with finances. It has been a good while since York got through a first-round tie and you only have to look at Cambridge as a prime example of what you can do – even though it was a different cup competition.

“If you can get through, you can get in with some real big boys. And a plum draw as a manager is fantastic because it can help you add some quality to your squad.

“Funds can be made available if you do well and as a manager, I’d like a little bit of that to add to the squad and improve the team and results. It’s a win-win situation.”

On Bradford, who reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup last season, Wilcox added: “Phil (Parkinson) has done a brilliant job since he has come to Bradford City and some of their cup exploits have been incredible.”

Other ties see last season’s semi-finalists Sheffield United handed a tricky trip to Morecambe, while relegated Hull City have also been assigned with a banana-skin clash at Accrington, who they last visited in 1959.

Stanley’s line-up currently includes Hull-born Josh Windass, son of Tigers legend Dean.

Sheffield Wednesday play host to Mansfield Town, while Huddersfield and Rotherham entertain Notts County and Cambridge United respectively.

Barnsley visit Scunthorpe United, managed by ex-Reds boss Mark Robins.

The game also hands a Glanford Park return for former Iron striker Sam Winnall, with the 2013-14 League Two Golden Boot winner missing the League One clash last season because of injury.

Middlesbrough head to Oldham for the second successive year in round one.

Meanwhile, the Football League fixtures for 2015-16 will be revealed at 9am this morning for Yorkshire’s 11 clubs.
