Grayson: Why we moved early to keep Kisnorbo at Leeds

LEEDS United boss Simon Grayson says the club’s new contract with Patrick Kisnorbo was negotiated ahead of schedule to “protect a valuable asset”.

Grayson did not want to risk losing the Australian defender to a rival club before the start of the season - prompting the surprise announcement last weekend of a two-year deal.

Kisnorbo signed the contract a week ago, although the deal is subject to a fitness test.

Both Brighton and Crystal Palace were known to be considering offers for Kisnorbo.

He returned from a ruptured Achilles tendon in April but reached the end of his previous deal on June 30, the day when Leeds began pre-season training.

Grayson said: “Paddy’s a valuable asset and I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t protect him.

“There was always the risk that he had a storming pre-season and found other clubs trying to sign him. We had to cover our backs.

“He’s looking fit and strong and it was always our intention – and his – to get a new contract signed and sealed as soon as possible.

“Doing it last weekend suited everyone concerned.”
