I want to give fans team they deserve – Warnock

AS a season that Neil Warnock has been ready to wave goodbye to for the best part of a month finally limps to a conclusion today, the Leeds United manager can not wait to get his Elland Road revolution under way.

Leicester City are the final day visitors and the Leeds chief is keen to sign off with a victory that will be enough to guarantee a top half finish for the West Yorkshire club.

But Warnock admits to looking forward to the moment when his clearout can begin and new players brought in whom he believes can turn United into genuine challengers next season.

He said: “I said a few weeks ago that I was ready for the season to finish and I had a few comments saying I shouldn’t have said that publicly. But it was the truth.

“I also believe the majority of fans shared that view when I said it as well. Since it was clear we couldn’t get in the play-offs, it has been a case of playing games where the results haven’t really mattered.

“I have not been used to that in my career too many times and I haven’t enjoyed it. But now the end is almost here and I would like us to sign off on a positive note by beating Leicester.”

Once the game with Nigel Pearson’s Foxes side is out of the way, Warnock’s next big date in the calendar is Wednesday when the United manager plans to announce his retained list.

The players will be summoned to Thorp Arch to hear whether they are part of the manager’s plans or not before a public announcement is made later that night.

Warnock then plans to hold a press briefing on Thursday to explain his thinking and, hopefully, provide an update on his attempts to strengthen the squad.

He has made it a priority to bring in as many new faces as possible at the start of the window and believes progress is being made.

The United chief said: “We have one signing already agreed and I am hoping others will soon follow. Mick (Jones, assistant manager) and Ronnie (Jepson, coach) were out watching games last Saturday instead of being with me at Cardiff.

“Ronnie will probably be back with me for the Leicester game but Mick will be at another game again. There is one player that I want Mick to run his eye over. We want to get players in early as the last thing a manager wants is to be doing things in a rush at the end of a summer.

“Two opportunities came up earlier this week and I am working on them right now.

“We need to make a quick decision as other clubs are interested but I believe because it is Leeds United then we have a great chance.

“I want to give the fans the team they deserve and I can promise everyone we will be doing our best this summer to make that happen.”
