Jones left angered by “unacceptable” actions of fans during Hillsborough derby

Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Chris Kirkland was knocked to the floor by one Leeds supporter during a mini-pitch invasion that followed Michael Tonge’s second-half equaliser.

Violence had earlier flared as missiles were hurled between rivals fans to leave Jones, who was also subjected to disgusting abuse from a section of the 5,000-strong travelling support, fuming at the final whistle.

Jones said: “I am really annoyed, it is totally unacceptable behaviour.

“They ran on to the pitch, have beaten up my ‘keeper and verbally abused me. I can handle it as I have had it from them for 12 years. It is a form ofracism but I will deal with it. All the stupid songs they sing about past events has to stop.

“They should be ashamed and it is up to the authorities to sort it out. They have to get a committee together and sort it out.

“We should be talking about a good game of football but instead we need to talk about vile animals.

“They should be banned from every ground in the country until their club sorts out this problem.

“They simply can’t get away with that. They need to put their house in order.”

Jones was also left angry by the United players walking to the Leppings Lane end of Hillsborough to clap their own supporters after the final whistle.

He added: “I am fuming with Neil (Warnock, Leeds manager)for sending his players to clap the fans. For what? Wrecking a stadium?

“I told Neil that afterwards. We have to stamp out this kind of thing out. It is just animals. They are vile animals.”

Warnock, however, hit back at his Wednesday counterpart.

He said: “I disagree with him. I think he is just disappointed not to win the game. Ninety nine per cent of our fans were superb. It made for a great atmosphere.

“Dave says a lot of things. I have been with him before and you do get disappointed if you don’t get the result.

“Both sets of fans have a group in their camp that we could do without. It was one moron (who ran on the pitch to attack Kirkland). It should be a custodial sentence.”
