Leeds face anxious wait over fitness of Becchio

LEEDS United are still waiting to hear the results of a scan on the knee injury that forced top scorer Luciano Becchio out of last weekend’s draw with Watford.

The Argentinian was brought off the bench against the Hornets just before the hour and he opened the scoring 18 minutes from time.

However, after Watford had hit back to lead 2-1, Becchio was forced out of the action after an accidental collision that left the striker limping.

Leeds subsequently hit back to claim a point but United manager Simon Grayson admitted his 20-goal hitman would have to be sent for a scan.

United host Reading on Good Friday before travelling to Crystal Palace on Monday.

If Becchio does miss out against the Royals, it could mean a recall for Billy Paynter, who was surprisingly not named in the 18-man squad to face Watford.

Paynter, who has netted just once since joining on a free transfer from Swindon Town last summer, had been suspended for the previous three games following his red card against Sheffield United in March.

But he was expected to be at least named on the bench last Saturday, only for Simon Grayson to opt for Davide Somma to start up front with Becchio on the bench alongside Ross McCormack.

Huddersfield Town loanee Sean Morrison has been recalled by parent club Reading and is likely to go straight into the Royals squad to face Leeds.

A spokesman for Reading said: “We believe Sean is better served by a return to the Madejski Stadium.”

The 20-year-old defender joined the Terriers last month as cover for Antony Kay and captain Peter Clarke, who at the time was carrying a niggling injury.

Due to Clarke remaining fit and sharing a partnership with Jamie McCombe that has brought Town six clean sheets in seven games, Morrison failed to make an appearance.

Manager Lee Clark said: “I am gutted to lose Sean because he is a very good footballer.

“He has shown a terrific attitude all the time he’s been here.

“I would like to have given Sean some game time, but how could I when the two lads in possession of the shirts have been playing the way they have?”
