On loan in the 2009-10 season, Vokes rose to powerfully head home an 86th-minute equaliser in front of a 27,672 lunchtime crowd.

italian striker Mirco Antenucci had curled home a beautiful goal for Leeds from the edge of the area just three minutes earlier but the Clarets hit back to share the spoils.

Winger Stuart Dallas soon went close to a debut-day goal for Leeds against the relegated Clarets.

Linking up again with his former manager at Brentford, Uwe Rosler, the Leeds head coach who gave him bow in place of Souleymane Doukara, Dallas struck the bar when his shot rebounded off goalkeeper Tom Heaton’s legs.

It came in the ninth minute and was the closest either side came in a competitive first 45 minutes.

Leeds captain Sol Bamba was the only player booked for a tackle from behind but his central defensive partner, Giuseppe Bellusci, was the villain of the piece as far as Burnley fans were concerned.

They clamoured for a penalty for hands before he cleared for a corner under pressure from Lukas Jutkiewicz.

Michael Kightly curled a shot wide of the far post and Jelle Vossen had another deflected for a corner as the visitors caused as many problems as Leeds.

Leeds cranked up the pressure after the break and should have gone ahead when Gaetano Berardi curled a inviting cross over Michael Duff but another Leeds debutant, sole striker Chris Wood, failed to control on his instep and knocked the ball to Heaton.

A fine challenge by Wood on the edge of the area saw the ball drop for Alex Mowatt, who fired narrowly wide after a booking for the Clarets’ Scott Arfield for bringing down Lewis Cook.

Leeds’ third debutant, Tom Adeyemi, also hooked an opportunity over the bar before Antenucci replaced Dallas and turned Michael Kightly before curling in the opener.

Vokes, however, had the last word in front of the Kop.
