Leeds United 2 Watford 2: Grayson unimpressed by Whites defence

LEEDS UNITED preserved their six-month unbeaten record at Elland Road courtesy of a last gasp own goal by Troy Deeney, writes Richard Sutcliffe.

The Hornets midfielder sliced a Barry Bannan corner into his own net just as Watford looked like taking all three points.

Goals from Lee Hodson and Andy Weimann had put Watford ahead after Leeds had gone ahead through Luciano Becchio.

The Argentinian had made the breakthrough 18 minutes from time courtesy of a flicked header from a free-kick by substitute Barry Bannan.

It came just as Leeds were starting to run out of ideas after several changes of formation and a couple of near misses.

The first came just before the hour when Bradley Johnson’s header looped just inches past the post.

Max Gradel then wasted a glorious opportunity when deciding to shoot when Robert Snodgrass was much better placed.

Davide Somma also went close before Becchio’s opener with a scuffed shot after being found by Johnson.

After opening the scoring, the Argentinian then wasted a great chance with a shot that blazed over and within a minute Watford were level courtesy of a Lee Hodson header.

With Becchio limping out of the action moments later, the Hornets sensed an unlikely win.

They took the lead five minutes from time when Danny Graham won a 50-50 with Andy O’Brien and squared for Andy Weimann to score.

It looked like the end of United’s six-month unbeaten run at Elland Road only for Troy Deeney to put through his own goal from a Barry Bannan corner.

“It was frustrating because I say the same things after every game,” said Leeds boss Simon Grayson.

“We get the goals but we make individual mistakes.

“Today, we got in front and then within five or 10 minutes it’s 2-1.We don’t have a siege mentality when we go in front.

“We knew it might be the 70th, 80th or 90th minute when we ground it out. We went 1-0 up, Luciano missed a chance, then it’s 1-1 and then 2-1.

“I keep having to say the same things on a regular basis which is frustrating for me, my staff and the players.

“At this stage of the season it doesn’t matter how you win games. We got the goal and then we switched off. Then players made soft challenges and Danny Graham gets in and puts the lad (Weimann) in.

“We pressed the button that we’ve pressed many a time this year.”
