Leeds United: Club cash in on Gradel clause as Morison departs for Millwall

United are to profit from a sell-on clause agreed when they sold Gradel to Saint Etienne in 2011.

Gradel’s £2m move - a controversial deal in which Leeds sold their player of the year - guaranteed the Elland Road club 10 per cent of any profit made from a future transfer.

The winger’s switch to Bournemouth - completed earlier today - is believed to have cost the Premier League side £7m.

Gradel has signed a four-year contract at Dean Court, returning to a club where he was twice on loan during the 2007-08 season.

Bournemouth were deducted 10 points by the Football League for entering administration in that campaign and later suffered relegation to League Two.

The turnaround since then has been dramatic and on Saturday Bournemouth host Aston Villa in their first ever Premier League fixture.

“It feels a little bit strange because everything has changed,” Gradel, 27, told Bournemouth’s official website.

“When I first arrived today I didn’t recognise the club, but I am very happy to see it is all moving in a good direction.

“It’s a good feeling. I am so happy. I had a great time here before so I’m very excited to be back.

“Not many people will understand why I came to Bournemouth. I had offers for more money and bigger clubs but in football you have to go where you will be happy.”

Meanwhile, it is understood that striker Steve Morison has parted company with United.

Morison left Elland Road earlier today after agreeing to sever the last year of his contract.

United spent several weeks attempting to remove Morison - one of their highest earners - from the wage bill and a settlement has been reached with 12 months of his deal remaining.

The 31-year-old is now expected to complete a free transfer to his former club Millwall.

Morison’s departure ends a difficult spell at Elland Road in which he struggled to find his form and produce goals.

Brought in from Norwich City as part of a swap deal for Luciano Becchio in 2013 - a deal in which Leeds also received a fee of £200,000 - he scored five times for United in 41 appearances.

Morison figured heavily in their recent pre-season campaign but Leeds were determined to move him on following heavy investments in striker Chris Wood and winger Stuart Dallas.
