“We have got four points and are in the middle,” said Carvalhal ahead of today’s lunchtime showdown. “Leeds have three.

“I am sure other coaches will feel like me, in that they can do better. Teams will be up and down all season, the Championship will be like this.”

Wednesday’s campaign started with a heartening victory over Bristol City that was followed by Carvalhal’s men making light work of Mansfield Town in the Capital One Cup.

Ipswich Town then inflicted the Owls’ first defeat a week ago at Portman Road before Wednesday night brought a hugely disappointing performance in a 1-1 draw at home to Reading.

On the need to bounce back at Elland Road, Carvalhal said: “It will be a very hard game. Leeds are compact, organised and a tough team.

“We know it will be a hard match. All the teams that we play in the Championship are tough.”

Asked about the below par display at Hillsborough against the Royals, Carvalhal added: “We know what we did good and what was missing.

“We lost some of our aggressiveness in attack and we missed opportunities to attack the goal. But the way we managed the ball from defence to midfield was good.

“We analysed the game. Lewis Price didn’t have a lot to do. We did a lot of good things but in the last 30 minutes we didn’t play aggressively enough and create enough problems for the keeper.

“I felt the Reading game was a completely balanced match. They were not better than us. We got lucky with the equaliser but the game was balanced.

“Eighty per cent of the teams in the Championship are balanced and can beat each other. The Championship is wide open. Sometimes we will win matches that people don’t expect and we will lose points when people don’t expect us to.”
